The Church of the Savior Not Made with Hands in Kotelniki.

The prototype of the project of the Church of the Savior Not Made with Hands in Kotelniki was the ancient temples of Pskov: harsh, simple in shape and decoration, they also serve as an excellent example of planting a building in the surrounding natural landscape. One of the best examples of planting a temple in a park area is a masterpiece of Pskov architecture - the Cathedral of St. Basil the Great on the Hill.

The plot for the projected temple is also located in a park area. There was an idea to raise the temple on an artificial hill, inside which there would be economic and technical premises. This solution allows you to visually focus on the temple as the final element of the composition of the central alley of the park. Due to the difference in relief, we can make natural lighting of the basement rooms located on the south side. Also, the hill allows you to make a summer amphitheater on the south side of the temple. The main entrance to the basement is also organized by a relief drop. All stairs, in addition to their main purpose, are used as benches and flower beds. Steps and ramps are organized on the hill for the convenience of access for low-mobility parishioners.

The central core of the temple is a cubic, pillarless, single-domed quadrangle with a large porch, above which there are choirs and rooms for priests. The main temple on the north and south sides is complemented by side chapels. The central semicircular apse is flanked by small volumes connecting the central altar with the side chapels.

In order for the symmetrical composition of the temple to look more attractive, various completions of the quadrangles of the northern and southern aisles were made. The northern aisle is crowned with a light drum, and the southern one is allocated due to the built-in belfry. The location of the belfry on the south side is due to the proximity of the temple to residential buildings. For this reason, it is advisable to place the belfry as far as possible from the windows of the apartments - on the south side. Access to the roof for its maintenance is possible from the belfry.

The drums are decorated with temple inscriptions. Such inscriptions decorated temples in the XV-XVI centuries and briefly told about the time of construction and dedication of the temple, about the authorities under which it was built, and about the construction customers.

The roofs of the temple are made flat with internal gutters, which simplifies the operation of the building in urban development.

There are three types of windows used in the temple building - square, semicircular and round. Their use depends on the type of room. In office and technical rooms - square; in the temple and porch - semicircular; in altars - round.

The basement of the temple is finished with natural stone, and the walls are brick with an uneven layer of lime coating. This technique allows you to give the walls a special sculptural expressiveness. The shadows from the trees on the uneven walls of the temple will create a bizarre, ever-changing pattern. The grass that fits close to the walls will be beautifully read against the background of their uneven surface.

The overall image of the structure is influenced not only by the shape of the building, proportions, architectural style and planning solution. Often the overall picture consists of small details: the texture of the walls, the combination of materials, the surrounding landscape, the play of chiaroscuro, the scale of the person.

In the project of the Church of the Savior Not Made with Hands, I wanted to convey the image of Pskov temples without copying them. To convey their spirit - calmness, warmth and comfort, the ability not to suppress a person, do not tire him, but on the contrary - to have to yourself.
